How to Care for Sunflowers

Sunflowers are easy flowers, but they have two quirks: they drink a lot, and their heavy heads need support. A few minutes of care on day one makes the whole bouquet last.

The First 10 Minutes

Trim the Stems

Cut 2 to 3 cm off each stem at an angle with clean scissors.

Strip the Lower Leaves

Remove any leaves that would sit under water to stop bacteria.

Fill the Vase Generously

Sunflowers are thirsty. Use clean water and add flower food if included.

Daily Care

  • Check the water level every day and top up.
  • Change the water fully every two days.
  • Re-trim the stems a little at each change.

Where to Put Them

Choose a cool, bright spot away from direct sun, heaters and ripening fruit. Heat is the quickest way to shorten their life.

Supporting Heavy Heads

Use a vase tall enough to hold the stems upright. If a head starts to droop, re-trim the stem and make sure it can drink freely.

Care for Baskets and Pots

For basket arrangements, keep the foam moist. For Sunflowers In Ceramic Pot, water regularly and keep in bright light.

Should I add flower food?

Yes, if included. It feeds the flowers and slows bacteria.

How much do sunflowers cost to replace or gift again?

Sunflowers in our collection start from about $42.9. Most bouquets sit around $60 to $90, and larger or premium arrangements run up to about $120. Check each product page for the current price.

Can I include care tips when ordering from overseas?

Yes. Add a short care note to the card message so the recipient knows what to do.

What is the most common sunflower care mistake?

Letting the vase run low or keeping leaves underwater. Both cause quick decline.

Why are my sunflower heads drooping?

Usually poor water uptake. Re-trim the stems and refill with clean water.
